Helping Clients Navigate A Course To A Better Future

More couples are meeting through online dating

There’s good news for North Carolina residents who are looking for or have found spouses on online dating sites. Their marriages are less likely to end in divorce than those of couples that met in more conventional ways.

More than a third of couples getting married today met their future spouses through online dating. A new study found that these marriages are stronger than others, which may be because these individuals aren’t marrying carbon copies of themselves. Couples who meet in traditional ways usually choose their spouses from among friends of friends, places of employment or neighbors. They may only rarely date outside their social circles.

People who use online dating sites often find that their life partners are totally different from themselves. It may be a case where opposites attract. Online dating is the second-most popular method for heterosexuals to find dates. For homosexuals, it is the most popular way for them to find mates.

This new study found that marriages of individuals who met online tend to be happier and last longer. Earlier research indicated that 7 percent of marriages resulting from online dating ended in divorce. The overall divorce rate in the United States is between 40 percent and 50 percent.

Regardless of how couples meet, sometimes a divorce is inevitable down the line. The longer a couple stays together can increase the complexity of the separation. Spouses who have children together need to figure out child custody and support when dissolving their marriages. They also may have shared assets, which necessitates a property division agreement. A family law attorney may be able to help with these and other issues to make the divorce process easier on his or her clients.
